Mystery May Be Solved!

by Amri and Gwynne

You remember the "egg letter" don't you? Today you will learn who has layed the eggs. Yikes--and drumroll please--Cutie-Pie! Her eggs have evolved into normal sized whitish elegance. Snowneck is just a grouchy bird. Cheesie (Mr. Cheeseball)is doing fine. Sleevie (Sleeve Eater) hopes you don't mind nibbled clothes. Bluestar says Mouse is the grouchy bird (Bluestar's right you know).

YIKES SAYS

Hi. This is me Yikes introducing my column YIKES SAYS. I would first like to thank Amri for this place to write. thanks for the bread, guys! More tomorrow, yes? -Yikes

FROM JANE

Wow - we're up to about 10 eggs a week, though Cutie-Pie - who laid every other day - has laid an egg two days in a row, so maybe she'll end up being a daily layer. The girls and I are looking into what will be involved in keeping chickens in the city to which we're moving. We can have 3 hens (no roosters), and their coop area needs to be in the rear part of the yard and at least 20' from any dwelling and at least three feet from the property lines. Hm. That's a little challenging, but not impossible! We hope!

CONTEST

Okay. Here is this problem we have. This nice newsletter has NO NAME. Send in a name involving chickens or eggs and we will choose our favorite. All names must be entered by august 31 2007 so don't wait too long!

FEEDER STORY

The chickies love food. The chickies are big. The chickies are ENTHUSIASTIC. If you speak english you know what this means if not, read on.

They knock over the feeder.

This means they waste food.

This is bad.

The Valencias are not stumped for long.

They hang up the feeder on a rope. Now it swings whenever they eat! UH-OH! Amri thinks up a plan. Jane puts a block under the feeder.

Problem solved.

FUN FACTS

--Chickens come in three basic varieties; egg-layer, multi-purpose, meat bird. Yikes is an egg-layer and our six were nearly in a stew pot!

--Chickens are desendants of the fierce meat eating dinosuars who roamed the earth millions of years ago so next time you eat chicken you can say "I just ate a dinosaur!"

--Today's domestic chickens originated from wild jungle fowl of southeast Asia 6000 to 8000 years ago. They were domesticated in India between 3000 to 4000 years ago raised by royalty for cockfighting. Because of their aggressive, single-minded focus on combat, roosters became symbols of war and courage.

Chickens Are Fun!

We know you like our flock who you have never seen and if you wish to learn more you should read KEEP CHICKENS which tells how to raise your own flock in the city.
